How Much Should I Eat To Lose Weight?

One pound is equal to 3,500 calories. A general rule of thumb that is often recommended to the dieter is to decrease current calorie intake by 500 calories per day, thus generating a one pound per week loss of weight. Unfortunately, there are a few glitches with this process and it sounds much easier than it is.

In my experience, a two pound per week goal is more desirable and easy to achieve.

Generally, the dieter may not be aware of how many calories they are currently consuming. They may be (and if like me in a previous life) consuming far more than 500 extra calories per day.

If the dieter can recall everything that they ate the previous day or so before, it's a good idea to tally those calories up. If not, the dieter should 'eat as usual' for one to three days and get a calorie count. Yes, it will take a bit of elbow grease, but the benefits are well-worth the hard work, both emotionally and physically.

In my experience, I truly do NOT condone low-calorie starvation diets. For more information on losing weight, we recommend Diet Bites, our Mother Site which goes into great detail on how to lose weight and keep it off for good.
