How Serious is Obesity? It's certainly 'no secret' that obesity is climbing the charts when it comes to preventable-related deaths. Although a person may die from heart complications, the health risks may have increased by the 'overweight factor'. So yes - death is a pretty serious consequence of obesity. However, the flip-side of the Diet Coin is that obesity effects individuals in different ways. Jan may be 75 pounds overweight and Jill, at a doctor recommended weight, yet Jan may actually be the healthier subject - overweight or not. So many different factors play into the overall scheme of dieting. The fault line resides in our failure to properly educate the public on the daily diet at a young age. We are sticklers for teaching basics, such as foods in the official food pyramid, and the recommended amounts listed on the pyramid. But currently, that table is flawed, as most individuals simply don't have the time to sort though the 'fine print' that expands in detail on the capsule of information contained in the official food pyramid. People actually think they can enjoy 6 OR up to 11 vegetables per day, when in fact, depending upon their height, genes, metabolism, and age, they may require only 6 servings. Rather than invent new methods of weight loss, at some point, we need to rethink the educational phase and begin at the beginning of life to start kids out on the right nutritional track so that those kids grow into healthier adults without the worry of weight loss.
